Local solar install

Local solar install

A two-week sprint to launch OVO’s solar franchise model

1 / Problem

OVO needed to revamp its solar experience with 2 key objectives — to provide a cost estimate and referral to a local installer. It had to be designed in just two weeks to support the new franchise model.

Customers need to be connected to local installers

Customers need to get a quote for their installation

2 / Design

Joining the team at the start of the design phase, I reviewed existing discovery work and challenged early wireframes, aligning with the team on priorities.

I mapped and explored multiple flow concepts to find an optimally balanced journey, refining the structure and Information architecture.

I identified, prioritised and focussed on critical moments in the flow - introducing the local installer and redesigning the cost estimate page.

Drawing inspiration from Airbnb’s “host” feature and social media patterns, I proposed installer profiles to both reinforce the local installer USP and build transparency and trust with the user.

Multiple sketches and wireframes helped me explore options quickly, narrowing down to the strongest solutions through daily feedback.

Daily feedback kept the journey evolving, with new ideas layered in—like letting users call their installer before completing a booking — adding immediacy and confidence.

3 / Testing

I tested with 5 users via Usertesting, keen to learn how they respond to the design and the installer profiles. 3 out of 5 said they built trust instantly, and most valued the option to contact their installer.

Minor signposting and labelling tweaks came out of testing, while 4 of 5 praised the quote system for offering clarity and choice.

4 / Accessibility

From the start, I embedded accessibility: AA contrast checks (Stark), clear page landmarks, logical focus order, and labeled elements. I ensured 44px touch targets for AAA compliance and ran guerrilla screen reader tests—fixing issues immediately.

5 / Solution

The final flow introduced approachable installer profiles, a streamlined cost estimate page, and clear calls to action. Together, these improvements built trust, inspired action, and showcased OVO’s local installer USP.

6 / Outcome

  • 15% conversion rate (36% increase over previous 11%)
  • Built trust through humanized installer profiles
  • Met business goals and won stakeholder approval

7 / Reflection

On this project I learned how to deliver results through intense, lean collaboration and under strict time constraints. It also reinforced how familiar patterns can be adapted to new industries to instil confidence.

With more time, I’d explore A/B test versions with and without the installer profile and the cost estimate to get a clear indication of impact. I’d then test alternative profile / cost estimate page layouts.
